Arise Virtual Solutions is a well known virtual call center company that is often mentioned in the media as a legitimate work-at-home option. However, other call center jobs may be better money-making opportunities for remote workers.
Rise requires its contractors to invest a lot of time and money into creating and launching their own businesses. It's a riskier business proposition than some other call center opportunities. If you are interested in working for Arise, be sure you carefully review all its policies before paying anything.
All About Arise Virtual Solutions
Based in Miramar, Florida, Arise Virtual Solutions has been around since 1994. It uses virtual call centers to outsource for its clients. The types of work include technical support, sales, and customer service. Arise requires its agents to become Call Center Companies (CCC), which means agents must become incorporated in their home states and pay Arise for the training required to work for its clients. Alternatively, the platform allows agents to work for an existing CCC.
What Is a Virtual Call Center?
Most virtual (or home) call centers either hire people as independent contractors or as telecommuting employees. Either way, agents are usually expected to provide their home office equipment. In some cases, companies might ask workers to cover the one-time cost of a background and credit check (though this is not standard). Most companies pay the cost of training and, in fact, pay their agents while they are trained. And while many companies do require that agents be independent contractors (as opposed to employees), most do not go so far as to ask them to become corporations.
How Arise Works
To become an Arise agent, you must pay to set up your corporation in your state or join an existing one. Then you must pay a fee for the initial client training. This is in addition to any cost you incur setting up a dedicated phone line (separate from your home line) and high-speed internet access.
Beyond these costs, once you are established as an Arise "Call Center Company" you must pay for specific training for any clients for which you work. These fees are traditionally paid for by employers that hire for call center positions—even companies that hire independent contractors. In addition to requiring you to bear this cost, Arise also charges a monthly service fee.
Here are the basic steps to getting started at Arise, along with other potential fees you might incur:
- Apply online. You must be age 18.
- If accepted, pay for a criminal background check.
- Establish an incorporated entity. This means completing the processes for incorporation in your state. Many states charge annual fees and taxes to corporations that they do not charge to independent contractors.
- Sign a contract with Arise.
- Set up a home office. Arise’s requirements are fairly typical of most home call center setups.
- Apply to enroll in client-specific certification courses, each of which carries a fee (anywhere from $19.99 to $250, according to the website), and lasts between four and eight weeks.
- Complete the training and begin working, assuming there are available opportunities.
Costs of Working for Arise
The initial outlay of time and money is sizable, and the ongoing costs are significant. At an absolute minimum, Arise call center agents must outlay several hundred dollars and four to eight weeks of time before making a dime.
Like other virtual call centers, compensation is usually done at a fixed rate, which could be by the call, by the minute, or by the hour, depending on the client. There is no guarantee that you will get the business you need to recoup your costs.
If these were all one-time costs, you could weigh the short-term losses against the long-term potential. But the fact is, the training fees and unpaid training time recur with each new client. Paying for all that training that might be useless if you move on to another company may not be a wise investment. Arise's monthly fees, along with potential annual state fees and taxes for your business, will continue to cost you.
Arise positions its model as creating small-business owners. And, of course, there is a risk in owning a business. But there are plenty of other virtual call center companies (and other work at home jobs) that do not require the upfront costs and risk level that Arise expects from its agents.
