There are many different formats and types of resumes to use, and which you choose can depend on a number of factors. The kind of jobs you are applying to, your level of experience, and the skills you have that set you apart from the typical candidate will influence how you put your resume together. But for many applicants, it can be helpful to include a resume profile at the top of your resume.

This section concisely describes your skills and experience and shows what makes you a strong candidate for a particular position. Think of it as a summary of your entire resume.

Find out more about the benefits of including this section, along with how to write it. Plus, see an example of a resume with a profile for a customer service job

Why Include a Resume Profile

Because the job market is so competitive, it’s important to make every contact with your potential employer stand out in a positive way. Most often, the first impression you make with the hiring manager is through your resume.

Hiring managers may need to evaluate hundreds of resumes for each open position. Understandably, they do not have a ton of time to spend reading each resume carefully. By including a resume profile, you can grab their attention.

You can use this section to highlight the skills, experiences, and awards that make you the ideal candidate for the position.

It's a nice way to make hiring managers want to learn more about what you can add to their company. Including a resume profile can help give your application an edge, increasing the likelihood that you'll get the call for a first interview.

How to Write a Resume Profile

If you're sold on the idea of incorporating this section, the next step is to write an effective resume profile. Follow these suggestions:

  • Keep it short. Your profile should be several sentences to a short paragraph long. You don't need to list every certification or paraphrase all your experience. You have the rest of your resume to list your previous employment and education.
  • Put it up top. Place you summary at the top of your resume, so that hiring managers and interviewers will read it first.
  • Personalize it for the job at hand. Tailor the profile section of your resume to the requirements of the position you're applying for. Show the reasons that you should stand apart from the rest of the applicants as the most interesting and qualified candidate.
  • Make sure it's readable. Often, the language used in resumes is quite formal. That's appropriate for the document. Still, resist the urge to break out the thesaurus. Write clearly and directly, so that hiring managers can understand what you're trying to convey.
  • Consider formatting. As well as your word choice, keep your formatting decisions in mind. The font size and style should be legible. Bullet points can sometimes be a helpful way to make it easy for readers to absorb text.
  • Sell yourself. Remember, the primary reason to include this section is to show employers that you're a strong candidate. Highlight your relevant skills and objectives. If possible, quantify them — it's impressive to use numbers.

Use Your Cover Letter to Elaborate

If you are including a cover letter with your resume, you can elaborate on the points in your profile.

Your resume and cover letter should complement each other, and using a profile section to bring attention to your most relevant qualities can help to enhance the strength of your cover letter as well as your resume.
