Founded in 2004, Facebook (originally called Facemash and then Thefacebook) is the world's largest social networking service with billions of users. What started off as a site exclusively for Harvard students has turned into a global giant with lots of influence. With the clear global impact Facebook is making, business owners are wise to use this powerful social media platform to make their own presence known.

2019 Facebook Statistics

As of June 2019, there are more than 2.41 billion monthly active users on Facebook and 1.59 billion daily active users, both up 8% from 2018. Individuals age 25–34 are Facebook's most common age demographic, accounting for 29.7% of all users. With 241 million active users, India has surpassed the United States as the country with the most active users, and they account for 11% of all Facebook users. The United States has 240 million active users, accounting for 68% of the total population.

Facebook Mobile

Don't overlook the powerful presence Facebook has captured on mobile devices—more than 2.2 billion people access Facebook over a mobile device, compared to 1.47 billion of desktop users. 47% of these users solely access Facebook through their mobile device, and 22% of all internet time on a mobile device is spent on Facebook; more than double that of Google search and YouTube combined.

Number of Businesses Advertising on Facebook

On June 18, 2013, Facebook announced that the company had 1 million active advertisers, which they categorized as companies or organizations that had advertised on the social network at least once in the last 28 days. As of July 2019, more than 5 million advertisers utilize Facebook's platform, and 93% of marketers regularly use it. Facebook advertising accounts for 19.7% of all global digital advertising. Instagram, which Facebook owns, accounts for 20% of its mobile ad revenue.

The Purchase of Instagram

In 2012, Facebook purchased Instagram (which had been around for two years) for about $1 billion in cash and stocks. At the time, it was their biggest purchase ever, and it has proven to be one of their best decisions to date as Instagram continues to be one of the fastest-growing social media platforms. Instagram has around 1 billion monthly active users and 500 million active daily users.

Users in Past Years

In 2009, Facebook had 150 million users, with more than 200 million people visiting Facebook monthly. At that time, that was equivalent to 1 in 5 people in the world that was on the Internet visiting Facebook. By late 2010, Facebook more than doubled in size and boasted more than 350 million registered users. The number of people visiting the platform was roughly equivalent to almost half the number of people who used the Internet.

By September 2011, more than 2.5 million websites had integrated with Facebook, including over 80 of comScore's U.S. Top 100 websites and over half of comScore's Global Top 100 websites. At the end of 2015, Facebook had 1.581 billion monthly active users and 1.038 billion daily active users.
