Hulu is a leader in the growing market of streaming media outlets. Hulu’s competitors include Netflix, Amazon, Vimeo, and YouTube among others. Hulu streams videos from more than 225 content providers. Content includes TV shows from a wide variety of channels including ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX, and other cable channels such as Bravo and Syfy, as well as films from studios like MGM and Sony.

How Hulu Works

In most cases, content is streamed on the Hulu site for free eight days after its broadcast debut or new shows via premium subscription service Hulu Plus. Hulu Plus, the premium subscriber version, is now accessible on more than 400 million Internet connected devices in the U.S., including Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Chromecast, Nintendo 3DS, and Windows Phone 8p as well as Apple TV, iPad, and millions of Samsung, Roku, and Wii devices.

Awards and Revenue

Hulu was named tops in its’ category of Digital Video in 2014 by FAST Company Magazine. They were also cited as one of the Most Democratic Workplaces by WorldBluin 2011. Hulu was launched in 2008 as a joint venture between NBC Universal and News Corp.; in 2009 Disney became a shareholder and content partner. Also in 2013, the parent companies of 21st Century Fox, NBCUniversal, and the Walt Disney Company injected the streaming video company with $750 million in new funding. Hulu reached $1 billion in revenue in 2013, up from $695 million in 2012.

In 2013 they also reached 5 million subscribers.

The Employee Base

The Hulu team is now 725 members, an almost 20% growth in the employee base in 2013. According to Glassdoor.com, 84% of Hulu employees would recommend the company to a friend and the company has an employee rating of 4.0 out of a 5.0, with a 4.3 for the company’s culture and values. Hulu Advertising Operations interns earn between $17 & $19 per hour, while Software Engineering interns average from between $5,300 to over $6,500 per month.

Approximately 41% of Hulu interns come from campus recruiting while another 41% come from online applications. Interns rated the interview process as a positive experience and fairly average in difficulty, with a 3.5 on a scale of 5.0.

Internship Example: Public Relations Paid Internship

The PR intern supports communications efforts. The position requires multitasking, intense focus on details, the ability to find humor in chaos, and a sense of urgency to respond promptly to the needs of the team. Traits of the PR intern should include cleverness, thoughtfulness, and tenaciousness. Candidates must also have a passion for the industry, for communications, and must possess a “can-do” attitude.


  • Write drafts of communications documents, to include: briefing sheets, pitches, blogs, and tweets
  • Assist with newsletters, website, intranet, wiki, and event planning
  • Research industry trends, market data, and current dynamics
  • Track Hulu media coverage and develop weekly media recaps
  • Research speaking opportunities and create briefing sheets for executive appearances

The interview process is generally a one-on-one phone interview, after which software engineering candidates are given a programming problem to solve in a defined 8-hour time period, which is then followed with a final face-to-face before receiving a job offer.
