Hulu is a U.S.-based leader in the growing market of streaming media outlets. Founded in 2007, Hulu has more than 28 million U.S. subscribers and is the only service that gives viewers instant access to current shows from every major U.S. broadcast network; libraries of hit TV series and films; and acclaimed Hulu originals.

Its competitors include HBO, Starz, Netflix, Showtime, YouTube, Amazon, VUDU, Apple, and iN DEMAND. It is majority-owned by Walt Disney Direct-to-Consumer & International, with Comcast and NBCUniversal owning 33% equity.

Hulu streams videos from more than 225 content providers. Content includes TV shows from a wide variety of channels including ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX, and cable channels such as Bravo and Syfy, as well as films from studios such as MGM and Sony.

How Hulu Works

In most cases, content is streamed on the Hulu site for free eight days after its broadcast debut or new shows via premium subscription service Hulu Plus. Hulu Plus, the premium subscriber version, is accessible on more than 400 million internet-connected devices in the United States, including Xbox, PlayStation, Google Chromecast, and Nintendo as well as Apple and Android devices.

In 2018, Hulu earned a record $1.5 billion in advertising revenue.

Awards and Recognition

The company has also received notable recognition for its content. The Handmade's Tale won two awards at the 33rd annual Television Critics Association Awards for Program of the Year and Outstanding Achievement in Drama. In addition, Hulu earned eight Primetime Emmy Awards and became the first streaming service to win Outstanding Drama Series for The Handmade's Tale. Other nominations and awards included the Golden Globe Awards, the Critics' Choice Documentary Awards, and the Grammy Awards.

According to Glassdoor.com, 84% of Hulu employees would recommend the company to a friend and the company has an employee rating of 4.0 out of a 5.0, with a 4.3 for the company’s culture and values. Hulu Advertising Operations interns earn between $17 and $19 per hour, while Software Engineering interns average from between $5,300 to over $6,500 per month.

Approximately 41% of Hulu interns come from campus recruiting, while another 41% come from online applications. Interns rated the interview process as a positive experience and fairly average in difficulty, with a 3.5 on a scale of 5.0.

Public Relations Paid Internship Example

The public relations (PR) intern supports communications efforts. The position requires multitasking, intense focus on details, the ability to find humor in chaos, and a sense of urgency to respond promptly to the needs of the team. Traits of the PR intern should include cleverness, thoughtfulness, and tenaciousness. Candidates must also have a passion for the industry, for communications, and must possess a “can-do” attitude.

Responsibilities include the following:

  • Write drafts of communications documents, to include: briefing sheets, pitches, blogs, and tweets.
  • Assist with newsletters, website, intranet, wiki, and event planning.
  • Research industry trends, market data, and current dynamics.
  • Track Hulu media coverage and develop weekly media recaps.
  • Research speaking opportunities and create briefing sheets for executive appearances.

Qualifications include the following:

  • Applicants must possess 0-2 years in marketing or PR/communications
  • Excellent project management and organizational skills
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
  • Social media fluency: understand how to leverage Facebook, Twitter, blogs
  • Graphic design experience including use of Adobe Creative Suite—and similar products—and Keynote

Requirements include the following:

  • Currently enrolled in a graduate or undergraduate program
  • Pursuing a degree in marketing, journalism, communications, business, or related area
  • Available to work the term of internship is from May/June—August

INTERVIEW

The interview process is generally a one-on-one phone interview followed by an in-person interview for those moving to the next stage of the process. Note that in addition to answering questions, you may be tested on your skills. For example, software engineering candidates are given a programming problem to solve in a defined 8-hour time period, which is then followed with a final in-person interview before receiving a job offer.
