Duties and Requirements of Marine Corps Enlisted Job MOS 0511
The Marine Corps has developed a code system to distinguish and identify a service member's job and role within the Corps. It's referred to as the Marine Occupational Specialty code system and it appears as the letters MOS followed by four digits. The first two numbers indicate the general field and the second two numbers identify the specific job within the field.
MOS 0511 is a Planning Specialist within the 05 Marine Air Ground Task Force Plans, commonly referred to as MAGTF. This is a primary MOS, meaning that it identifies a Marine's primary skills and his best area of service within the Corps based on those skills.

Job Description of MOS 0511, the MAGTF Planning Specialist
The enlisted MAGTF Planning Specialist is responsible for functional support in the areas of FDP&E. Typical duties include updating plan and unit information to unit level detail for force deployment planning. These specialists also operate and manage force deployment planning automated data processing tools. They produce force reports and properly format and forward electronic mail, files, and newsgroup message traffic.
This MOS operates the Joint Forces Requirement Generator and must be capable of operating the JOPES Editing Tool (JET). He or she is responsible for operating Web Scheduling and Movement, and for generating reports.

Job Requirements of MOS 0511, the MAGTF Planning Specialist
It's generally advised that when choosing an MOS and finding the one that best suits you, a Marine should review his or her ASVAB scoring to pinpoint personal strengths. This can help identify where he or she excels. Applicants for MOS 055 must have a GT score of 110 or higher. An applicant must have or be eligible for a top-secret security clearance and must be a U.S. citizen.
As for training, applicants must also complete the MAGTF Plans Basic Course. An interview and recommendation by an installation's senior MAGTF Planner is required for a lateral move into this occupational field, and the Marine must attend PMOS training within six months of reporting to a command that provides on-the-job training.
The Marine must be a Corporal or below in any other MOS. He or she must additionally have read the Force Deployment Planning and Execution Manuel (MCO 3000.18B) and the Individual Training Standard for MAGTF Plans/Operations Officer (MOS 0502), as well as MAGTF Planning Specialist (MOS 0511) (MCO 1510.124).
Some level of computer literacy is required.
