Saying thank you is one of the best ways to maintain a relationship with your professional connections. That's especially the case when you're job hunting. It is important to take the time to thank everyone who helps with your career or job search, especially networking contacts who are willing to offer you advice and – even better – who recommend you to others in their professional networks. Below is a sample letter you can personalize and send (via email or mail) to a networking contact.

Why You Should Send a Thank-You Letter or Email

What used to be called the “Old Boys’ Network” has, with the advent and meteoric rise of social media, morphed into long-armed entities like LinkedIn, which can be powerful tools for identifying career opportunities. It’s as true as ever that it helps to “know someone” in order to get a job. This is true both for traditional and for Internet-based workplaces.

Indeed, in an economy where virtual/telecommuting jobs are on the rise, actively maintaining a professional network is essential – you may well be recommended for jobs and/or hired by people you will never meet in person. Especially when you have no personal, face-to-face contact with a professional colleague, it is imperative to compensate for this lack by writing well-crafted thank you letters when they assist you.

Professionals who take the time out of their busy schedules to help you with your career search deserve your thanks. They are also putting their own reputations on the line whenever they agree to add you to their professional networks – their doing so is a statement of their belief in your abilities and potential.

What to Include in Your Letter

In using the following sample thank-you letter, be sure to tailor it to reflect your own relationship with its recipient, adding details specific to the conversation(s) you have had with them.

If you are sending an email letter, there is no need to include your return address or your contact's address. List your contact information in your signature.
