Are you quitting your job to travel abroad? Congratulations! That's a big, exciting decision. As with any resignation, it's best to write a letter to your employer to formally resign.

Why Write a Resignation Letter

If you search the Internet, you can find round-ups of "epic" and "hysterical" resignation letters. It might feel tempting to send a no-holds-barred frank summation of your time at the company, and flaunt how happy you are to be leaving. That would be a mistake. You don't really want your resignation letter to wind up on one of those Internet lists. It could harm your future employment opportunities.

Writing a resignation letter is one of the final impressions you'll leave on your employer — aim to make it a good one. Along with being an important professional gesture, a resignation letter serves as your official notice. Writing this letter helps ease the transition for both you and your manager.

What to Include in Your Resignation Letter

Along with stating that you will be resigning, the most important information to share is your last day of employment. (Ideally, provide the company with at least two weeks' notice.) As well, it's customary to express appreciation for the opportunity. While it's common to offer to help during the transition, it's not required. Keep the letter brief and to the point.

Avoid complaints and criticisms in your resignation letter. A resignation letter is a formal document that may be placed in your employee file and consulted if the company is ever asked to provide you with a reference. Ultimately, this is an HR communication, so it's best to be professional in your message.
