The USAG Grafenwoehr is located in a scenic, rural section approximately 60 miles from Nuernberg, in the State of Bavaria (Bayern). The city of Grafenwoehr lies right outside the gates of the training area and owes much of its prosperity to the soldiers training there.
U.S. Army Garrison Bavaria is headquartered in Grafenwoehr. U.S. Army Garrison Grafenwoehr was redesignated as U.S. Army Garrison Bavaria in 2013. USAG Bavaria now overseas Army installations in Grafenwoehr, Vilseck, Hohenfels and Garmisch. The U.S. Army installation at Vilseck is 20 minutes away. USAG Bavaria encompasses and provides service to U.S. Army installations in Grafenwoehr (Tower Barracks), Vilseck (Rose Barracks), Hohenfels (Hohenfels Training Area) and Garmisch (Artillery Kasern and Sheridan Barracks). The installations at Grafenwoehr and Vilseck provide primary support to the Joint Multinational Training Command and the 2nd Cavalry Regiment.

United States Army Garrison (USAG) Grafenwoehr consists of the Vilseck and Grafenwoehr communities, which are located in beautiful Bavaria, about 60 miles northeast of Nuernberg.
In addition to the military facilities and live fire training areas, the USAG Grafenwoehr is also the perfect location for trips and visits to nearby local German sites of interest. Not far from the base, you can participate in the biggest beer fest in the world (Munich's Oktoberfest), tour the castle that Walt Disney copied for Sleeping Beauty's castle in DisneyLand (Neuschwanstein Castle), buy world famous crystal or porcelain at rock bottom prices, or visit Poland, Italy, the Swiss Alps, Austria, the Czech Republic and many others.
03Population/Major Units Assigned
The US Army Garrison Bavaria at Grafenwoehr mission is to provide high-quality base operations and community support to all U.S. personnel in Grafenwoehr-Vilseck, Hohenfels and Garmisch. USAG Bavaria directly support the 7th Army Joint Multinational Training Command (JMTC), the largest training command outside the continental United States. Bavaria is home to more than 35,000 US Military members and their families,
The 7th Army JMTC is a unified command consisting of seven directorates:
Combined Arms Training Center,
Grafenwoehr Training Area,
International Special Training Centre,
Joint Multinational Readiness Center,
Joint Multinational Simulation Center,
7th Army NCO Academy and
Training Support Activity Europe.
The Grafenwoehr Training Area today is the largest training area in Europe, providing vast ranges, simulation centers, classrooms and facilities for realistic and relevant training to U.S. Army, Joint Service, NATO and allied units and leaders. From small arms to tanks, artillery, aerial gunnery and close air support, the GTA is composed of 4 branches: the maneuver branch, scheduling branch, safety branch and range support branch.
04Visiting / Living on USAG Grafenwoehr
Temporary lodging is available on- and off USAG Grafenwoehr. You will want to make reservations for temporary lodging as soon as you receive orders. When space is not available, the installation lodging office will provide information on where additional space (contract quarters) with good rates may be available.
Some temporary lodging has provisions for meal preparation, but budget for a few meals to be eaten out. If you are living on the economy, only breakfast will be included in the price of your hotel room.
Government quarters in the Grafenwoehr and Vilseckareas consist of on post housing, off post leased housing and Government Rental Program Housing (GRHP). Government controlled housing is located both on the installation and in the surrounding local area. All soldiers on a 36 month accompanied tour are eligible for assignment to government-controlled quarters. While a majority of the housing is located on the installation, one should anticipate that an assignment to government leased housing is a distinct possibility. Leased housing in the area was built for occupancy by Americans.
Soldiers and their families needing housing in the Vilseck community may live on post or in leased/private rental housing on the local economy. Government-controlled quarters consist of government-owned and leased.
United States Army Garrison Grafenwoehr has two Elementary schools (K-5), one High school and one Middle school. There is one each Elementary school located in Grafenwoehr and Vilseck. Middle School students (grades 6-8) from Grafenwoehr and Vilseck attend Mittle School in Netzaberg. High School students (grades 9-12) attend High School in Vilseck. Vilseck is located about 15 miles from Grafenwoehr. Children of Military Members and Department of Defense , Civilians, and qualified NAF employees who are command sponsored may attend DoDDS schools on Post.
Home schooling is authorized but contacts with a home schooling association should be made before leaving for Germany. You may also want to purchase curriculum materials before you arrive. Sponsors of children ages 6-18 who are not enrolled in a DOD school must complete that parent choice form which is available through the school liaison officer.
Families who will be moving into the Grafenwoehr community can expect a 0-1 month wait for childcare. Before leaving your current duty station, families (especially Single and Dual Military) are encouraged to notify Central Registration to place their children on the Protected Waiting List. Upon arrival in Germany, families on the waiting list will be given first priority to place children into programs.
All children and youth are required to be registered before using any Child Youth Services program. The Central Registration Office located in Vilseck assists all in processing families assigned to the Vilseck Installation. Families who will be living in Grafenwoehr may also register at the CYS Registration assistance office.
Child Development Centers with DOD certification are available within the military USAG Grafenwoehr area. The hours available are from 5:30 a.m - 6:00 p.m.
Grafenwoehr Health Clinic care includes: care of adults, children, and infants including treatment of acute and chronic illness, minor injuries, lacerations, training and sports injuries. Soldier Medical Readiness including physical exams, hearing conservation, immunizations, and aviation medicine. Women's health care including well-woman exams, Pap smears, and contraceptive counseling. Preventive health care including well baby visits, school and sports physicals, adult physical exams, and preventive heath screening and counseling. Immunizations for infants, children, and adults. Minor surgical procedures including vasectomies and infant circumcision.
For a medical emergency (threatening to life, limb, or eye sight) after hours or on weekends:
If you have a medical condition that can't wait when the clinic is not open, you will need to go to a local German hospital. Always remember to call the MP Desk first at DSN 114, CIV 09641-83-114, 24 hours per day, seven days per week. They will have a translator call the hospital for you and can also sign an ambulance onto the installation if needed.
If you are out and about and have to go to a German hospital, call them as soon as possible. They will notify the translator and also TRICARE and the Patient Liaison.
