Due to ongoing tensions with neighboring North Korea, Camp Humphreys' location is of some strategic significance. It's about 60 miles away from the demilitarized zone (DMZ), the buffer that separates North and South Korea.

The area surrounding Camp Humphreys is mostly flat and very humid, because of the nearby Ansong River and Asan Bay. It's made up of farming communities and rice paddies.
