A successful web content specialist must have a combination of writing, technical and interpersonal skills as their responsibilities vacillate from back-end work to meetings with web developers and marketing execs. Here's how to position your writing skills, followed by a sample cover letter.

Writing and Editorial Skills

Effective web content is about creating a conversation that is not only informative but acts as a call to action for readers.

What is is the site about, who is it for and what does it do? Getting these points across is critical for the creation and recognition of the brand.

In addition, effective web writing informs usability - letting readers know where they can go on the site and what they can do, with the goal of keeping them there longer. Solid writing also translates to a strong SEO presence--the better your writing conveys meaning, the better the site will perform.  Use your cover letter to highlight examples where you've created compelling, user-friendly content that helped build traffic.

Sample Cover Letter for a Web Content Specialist

Dear Mr. Smith:

I'm writing to express my interest in the Web Content Specialist position listed on Monster.com. I have experience building large, consumer-focused health-based content sites and while much of my experience has been in the business world, I understand the social value of the non-profit sector.

I'm confident that my business experience would be applicable and that I'd be an asset to your organization.

My responsibilities included the development and management of the site's editorial voice and style, the weekly editorial calendar, and the daily content programming and production of the website.

I worked closely with healthcare professionals and medical editors to help them provide the best possible information to a consumer audience of patients. In addition, I helped physicians learn to utilize their medical content to write user-friendly, easily comprehensible text.

I've learned how to build strong relationships with all departments in an organization and I have the ability to work within a team as well as across teams. I can work with web engineers to resolve technical issues and implement technical enhancements, liaise with the development department to implement design and functional enhancements, and monitor site statistics and conduct search engine optimization.

Thank you for your consideration and I hope to meet with you in person to discuss the position.
